Penn Masala is the world's firstPenn Masala performs at the White House Penn Current - October 15, 2009 and premier Hindi a cappella group, formed in 1996 by students at the University of Pennsylvania. Penn Masala’s music has been influenced by the Eastern and Western cultures that represent the group’s membership. The group was featured on the soundtrack of American Desi, and has released seven full-length albums: ''Awaaz'', ''11 PM'', ''Soundcheck'', ''The Brown Album'', ''Pehchaan'', ''On Detours'', ''Panoramic'', and the compilation album ''Out of Stock''.

History

Penn Masala, often stylized as PennMasala or pennmasala, was formed in 1996 by students at the University of Pennsylvania, who wanted to represent their subcontinental heritage and music through a cappella. Among other, more long-standing a cappella groups, Penn Masala stood out as the only a cappella group in the world that sang Indian music. This defining characteristic of the group brought it immediate attention as members fused Hindi and English music in original song formats. Soon, the group began to bill itself as "The world's first and premier Hindi a cappella group". Within just four years of its inception, Penn Masala had gained close to 15 members. By 2002, the group released its first two CDs: ''Awaaz'' (Hindi for ''sound'') was released in 1999, and ''11 PM'' was released in 2001. Over the next 3 years, Penn Masala released two more full-length albums, ''Soundcheck'' and ''The Brown Album'', and a compilation CD entitled ''Out of Stock'', which included favorites from the first 3 albums. In 2007, the group released its fifth studio album, ''Pehchaan'' (Hindi for ''identity''). The group followed up the success of ''Pehchaan'' with their sixth album, ''On Detours,'' which was released in March 2009. In 2011, they released their seventh studio album titled ''Panoramic'', which features their single "Viva La Vida/Jashn-e-Bahara".

Performances

Penn Masala performs around the world, with much of their traveling done in the United States; the group performs at numerous universities and events across the world, spanning cities from Kolkata to London to Montreal and San Francisco.

In 1999, soon after the release of ''Awaaz'', Penn Masala went on its first international tour to the United Kingdom, hitting the airwaves and performing all across the United Kingdom. The group gave two particularly noteworthy concerts in New York City: once in 2000 at the Zee Gold Bollywood Awards in the Nassau Coliseum, and again in 2002 at the Bollywood Music Awards in the Hammerstein Ballroom.

India tours

The group has traveled to India several times. In 2002, the group traveled to Mumbai, India to perform at the Star Screen Awards, during which time the members appeared on MTV Asia. In 2006, the group celebrated its 10th anniversary with a tour of India. The men performed at such venues as the National Centre for the Performing Arts at Nariman Point in Mumbai and Swabhumi in Kolkata. In January 2010, the group did another tour across India, selling out the Hard Rock Cafes in New Delhi and Mumbai. Penn Masala also performed at the Oberoi Trident at a ceremony honoring the achievements of Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani. Present were many notable personalities, including Nita Ambani, director Rajkumar Hirani, director/producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra, former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Farooq Abdullah, actors Imran Khan, Rahul Bose and Vinod Khanna, and cricketer Sachin Tendulkar among others. The group also performed at the well-known Lumbini Park Amphitheatre in Hyderabad, and were featured in numerous media outlets, including NDTV, CNBC TV 18, BBC Asia, The Hindustan Times, Zee TV, and CNN-IBN among others.

United Kingdom and Canada tours

After its initial United Kindom tour, Penn Masala continued reaching out to audiences abroad with a tour of the nation in March 2010. Among others, two notable performances were at St. James Piccadilly in central London, and in Hammersmith, where the group headlined a nationwide music competition. In November 2010 Penn Masala performed in Montreal, their first Canadian performance in ten years. Then again in 2011, Penn Masala toured the United Kingdom and did a show at the Lancaster Hotel for The Rajasthani Foundation's Diwali Charity Gala Ball. Audience members included the Hinduja Brothers of the Hinduja Group, Lakshmi Narayan Mittal, Europe's richest man and CEO of ArcelorMittal, as well as the company's CFO Aditya Mittal.

Domestic tours

Every semester, Penn Masala tours at a few university campuses. For example in 2011, Penn Masala performed full-length shows at University of Michigan, Vanderbilt University, University of Ohio, University of Houston, Rutgers University, Philadelphia Museum of Art University of North Carolina, University of Maryland and a second performance at Rutgers University, as well as an international gig in the United Kingdom. However on top of these routine performances, Penn Masala also has had the honor to perform for a number of famous individuals ranging from Anderson Cooper to Henry Kissinger to Ban Ki-Moon.

On October 14, 2009, Penn Masala performed at the White House in Washington, D.C. for the White House's celebration of Diwali and the signing ceremony of the Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. The event took place in the East Room, with attendees including President Barack Obama, the Secretary of Commerce and Secretary of Education, Associate Director of Public Engagement Kalpen Modi (also known as Kal Penn), members of Congress, and distinguished community members. Penn Masala opened the ceremony with a performance which was followed by a speech by President Obama, who commended their creative energy and contributions to the Asian American community. In fact in 2012, it was leaked that along with artists such as Jay Z, Adam Levine, Fergie, Arcade Fire and others, Penn Masala was to be courted by President Barack Obama's team in order to obtain their celebrity endorsement. In 2011, Penn Masala was invited to perform for the presidents of universities all over the world as well as UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon.

Penn Masala also holds a large annual spring concert at the University of Pennsylvania in the university's largest performance venue, Irvine Auditorium. The concert features a wide selection of their songs, and incorporates humor throughout the show using skits and videos that often parody or spoof popular culture. The end of the show is usually marked by a traditional gathering of Masala alumni and current members of the group on stage to commemorate the group and its extensive alumni network.

Music

Penn Masala combines various musical traditions, including Hindi film music, pop, hip-hop, R&B, rock, and Indian Classical styles. The group also uses a wide array of languages in their songs. Their compositions are primarily sung in English or Hindi, but certain songs include Arabic, Punjabi, Kannada, and Tamil as well.

Penn Masala blends popular songs to create its own independent version, which is melodically and thematically unified. Most songs fuse popular Hindi and English songs (in the past the group has covered songs by artists such as U2 and Justin Timberlake), into an a cappella rendition. Some songs are purely Hindi; for example, "Bahara" on ''Panoramic'', and "Yeh Honsla" on ''On Detours'' and others purely English, such as "What Goes Around Comes Around" on ''On Detours''. Other songs, such as "Aicha" and "Is Pal Mein", incorporate Hindi and English lyrics into a single song. "Aankhon Mein Tu Hai" also includes Tamil verses, "Saade Dil Te" incorporates a Punjabi song, while "Masala Dosa" begins with the Kannada hymn "Krishna Ni Begane Baaro" and "Aicha" includes Arabic verses. While most of the group's songs are interpretations of already-existing songs, the group also composes originals, such as "Main Tanha" and "Pehchaan" on the album ''Pehchaan'', "Kal Ka Sapna" and "Distant Places" on ''On Detours'', and "Is Pal Mein" and "Kaash" on ''Panoramic''.

Penn Masala's music has been popularly and critically acclaimed. "Meri Sapno Ki Rani" and "Aap Jaise Koi" were both featured in American Desi, while a music video was made for "Chamak Challo", which debuted in the Top 10 on Channel [V] India. Both "Chamak Challo" and "Bharat Humko Jaan Se Pyara Hai", a celebration of India's 50th anniversary of independence, brought immediate attention to the group in the fall of 1997, and have been fan favorites ever since. Penn Masala songs have been routinely selected for Varsity Vocals' ''Best of Collegiate A Cappella'' CD. "Bharat Humko Jaan Se Pyara Hai" was the first Penn Masala song to be honored. After that, " "Pehchaan" from "Pehchaan", "Lovestoned/Ya Ali" from "On Detours" and "Is Pal Mein" from "Panoramic" have all been selected to be on the Best of Collegiate A Cappella CD for their respective years.

Members

Penn Masala is a living, evolving group. Made up of University of Pennsylvania students, the group's membership constantly changes as veteran members graduate and new members enter the group through an audition process.

Penn Masala currently consists of: Akiff Premjee, Varshil Patel, Ram Narayan, Akshat Vaidya, Bharat Moudgil, Vinay Rao, Harshil Shukla, Samuel Levenson, Shriram Chauhan, Mahesh Murali, Rohan Murthy, Dilip Rajan, Dhruv Maheshwari, and Ashwin Muthiah .

The group's early members included Naveen Wadhera, Alekh Dalal, Kunal Bajaj, Himanshu Sheth, Pankaj Kakkar, Mihir Talati, Abhijeet Patwardhan, Bud Bhattacharyya, Deep Trivedi, Brian Hong, Ameesh Shah, Veeral Rathod, Vishal Oberoi and Ankur Gupta.

Webster Griffin Tarpley (born 1946) is an American historian, author, journalist, lecturer, and critic of US foreign and domestic policy. Tarpley maintains that the September 11 attacks were engineered by a rogue network of the military-industrial complex and intelligence agencies as a false flag operation. His writings and speeches describe a model of terror operations by a rogue network in the military/intelligence sector working with moles in the private sector and in corporate media, and locates such contemporary false flag operations in a historical context stretching back in the English speaking world to at least the Gunpowder Plot in England in 1605.

Education

Tarpley was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts in 1946. He received a BA degree ''summa cum laude'' in English and Italian from Princeton University in 1966. While a student at Princeton he became a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and was a Fulbright Scholar at University of Turin in Italy. Tarpley also obtained a MA degree in humanities from Skidmore College. As well as a Ph.D. from The Catholic University of America in History.

Career

In 1971, Tarpley was on the editorial board of ''The Campaigner'', a National Caucus of Labor Committees' journal, according to its masthead.

As a European based journalist in the 1980s, Tarpley wrote a study on the assassination of Prime Minister Aldo Moro. The study claimed that the murder was a false flag operation orchestrated by the Propaganda Due, a Masonic Lodge, with the cooperation of senior members of Italian government secret services but blamed on the Red Brigades.

Tarpley was president of the Schiller Institute of the United States in the 1980s and in 1993. In 1986 Tarpley attempted to run on Lyndon LaRouche's U.S. Labor Party platform in the New York State Democratic Party primary for the U.S. Senate, but was ruled off the ballot because of a defect in his nominating petitions. He was a frequent host of "The LaRouche Connection" which its producer LaRouche's Executive Intelligence Review News Service describes as "a news and information cable television program."

Tarpley first gained attention for co-authoring, with Anton Chaitkin, ("history editor of Executive Intelligence Review") a 1992 book on George H. W. Bush, ''George Bush: The Unauthorized Biography,'' which was published by Executive Intelligence Review, run by Lyndon LaRouche. He has expounded the "Versailles Thesis" laying the blame for the great wars of the 20th century on intrigues by Britain to retain her dominance. He gained experience as a political operative during his years with the LaRouche movement but broke away sometime after 1995.

In 2005, Tarpley published ''9/11 Synthetic Terror: Made in USA''. He speaks at length about the themes in the book during an interview in the film ''Oil, Smoke, Mirrors''.

Since March, 2006, Tarpley has had a weekly online talk radio show called World Crisis Radio, currently hosted on GCNLive.com. Tarpley is a member of the "world anti-imperialist conference" Axis for Peace, of Scholars for 9/11 Truth and of a research ''Netzwerk'' of German 9/11 authors founded in September 2006. He is featured in the film, Zero: an investigation into 9/11 (2007–2008).

Tarpley is a critic of the Dalai Lama; in 2010 he told the state-funded ''Russia Today'' that "pre-1959 Tibet ... was probably the closest thing to hell on earth that you had ... social reform was impossible." In the interview he criticizes US funding of pro-Dalai Lama organizations, which he says amounts to US$2 million per year, saying "this is a bad deal for the American taxpayers."

He also maintains that "The notion of anthropogenic global warming is a fraud."

Jeff Rense is an American conspiracy theorist and radio talk-show host of the ''Jeff Rense Program'', broadcast on US satellite radio via Republic Broadcasting Network (RBN) and Internet radio.

Rense's radio program and website, Rense.com, cover subjects such as 9/11 conspiracy theories, UFO reporting, paranormal phenomena, Holocaust denial, Zionism, tracking of new diseases and possible resultant pandemics, environmental concerns (see chemtrails), animal rights, possible evidence of advanced ancient technology, geopolitical developments and emergent energy technologies, complementary and alternative medicine among other subjects.

Rense's show has been accused of being among "conspiracy-oriented Internet radio shows that often feature antisemites and extremists" by the Anti-Defamation League.

Biographical information

Rense was born in St. Louis, Missouri and grew up in Southern California. Rense worked as a television news reporter, producer and anchor for Santa Barbara's ABC affiliate, KEYT-TV. He performed the same duties for two TV stations in the Northwest in the early to mid-1980s, chiefly Oregon NBC affiliate KOBI-TV, where he spent several years. He left the business after jobs in Oregon and at a Las Vegas, Nevada television stations. Later, Rense returned to Santa Barbara and opened several "All About Pets" stores, which he sold in the early-1990s. Rense hosts a web site on the music and life of tenor Mario Lanza. In 2007, 3 CDs of rare recordings of Mario Lanza's were released which Rense produced.

Radio show

Rense first tried his hand at radio while an education major at the University of California Santa Barbara. Sometime in 1994 Rense decided to self-finance his own radio show and approached Santa Barbara radio station KTMS with his idea for a talk radio show. The web stream radio show was originally known as "Sightings on the Radio", by agreement with actor/producer Henry Winkler, who was producing the syndicated television show "Sightings" (TV series 1992–1997). The radio show was web broadcast at the web address www.sightings.com. About the year 2000, all reference to "Sightings" was dropped, and the new web site www.rense.com was introduced. The show is broadcast live over radio networks, satellite radio and the internet.

The show was originally distributed by Premiere Radio Networks, but was dropped in the late 1990s. Genesis Communications Network took over distribution at that time, and carried the show through August 2009, at which point he pulled the show from the network after he accused fellow GCN host Alex Jones of terrorizing his family. Rense is currently broadcasting via the similarly themed Republic Broadcasting Network.

Show topics & previous guests

Two recurring themes on the Rense show are a general mistrust of the establishment (ranging from the right-wing to President Barack Obama), and a range of theories about who was behind the September 11 attacks on the New York World Trade Center in 2001. Regular guests include conspiracy theorists, geopolitical experts, ufologists, and have included Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, ''The Political Cesspool'' host James Edwards, Jordan Maxwell, and Devvy Kidd. One of Rense's favourite guests is paranormal expert Brad Steiger, who is also a personal friend of Rense. Rense has also interviewed controversial South African journalist Jani Allan and ex-Zimbabwean Jan Lamprecht, who became a regular commentator.

Usha Uthup (born November 8, 1947) is a popular Indian pop, jazz and playback singer. She is well known for popular hits in the late 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.

Early life

Usha was born in Mumbai, in a Tamil Brahmin family that hailed from Tamil Nadu, in Madras (now Chennai) in 1947.

When she was in school she was thrown out of music class because she didn't fit in with a voice like hers. But her music teacher recognized that she had some music in her and would give her clappers or triangles to play. Even though she was not formally trained in music, she grew up in an atmosphere of music. Her parents used to listen to a wide range from Western classical to Hindustani and Carnatic including Kishori Amonkar and Bade Ghulam Ali Khan on radio and she used to join them. She used to enjoy listening to Radio Ceylon.

Her next door neighbour was S.M.A. Pathan, who was then the deputy commissioner of police. His daughter, Jamila, inspired Usha to learn Hindi, wear salwar kameez and take up Indian classical music. This fusion approach helped her to pioneer her unique brand of Indian pop in the 1970s. She is married to Mr Jani Uthup from Kottayam, Kerala.

She is presently a resident of Kolkata,West Bengal.

Career

Her first public singing occurred when she was nine. Her sisters who were already exploring a music career, took her to a musician called Ameen Sayani who gave her an opportunity to sing on the Ovaltine Music Hour in Radio Ceylon. She sang a number called "Mockingbird Hill". After that, several appearances followed through her teenage years.

Singing career

Uthup started singing in a small nightclub in Chennai called as Nine Gems in the basement of the erstwhile Safire theater complex on Mount Road, when she was 20, wearing a saree and leg callipers. Her performance was so well received that the owner of the nightclub asked her to stay on for a week. After her first night club gig, she began singing in Calcutta at night clubs such as "Trincas". She met her future husband Uthup in Trincas. At about the same time, she also sang at "Talk of the Town", now known as "Not Just Jazz By The Bay" in Bombay (now Mumbai). After Trincas, her next engagement took her to Delhi where she sang at the Oberoi hotels. By happenstance, a film crew belonging to Navketan unit including Shashi Kapoor visited the nightclub and they offered her a chance to sing movie playback. As a result, she started her Bollywood career with ''Hare Rama Hare Krishna''. Originally, she was supposed to sing Dum Maro Dum along with Asha Bhosle. However, as a result of internal politicking on the part of other singers, she lost that chance but ended up singing an English verse.

In 1968, she recorded covers of two pop songs in English, "Jambalaya" and The Kingston Trio's "Greenback Dollar", on an EP, ''Love Story'', and "Scotch and Soda", another Kingston Trio song, which sold very well in the Indian market. She also spent some time in London during this early period. She was a frequent visitor to Vernon Corea's BBC office at the Langham in London and was interviewed on ''London Sounds Eastern'' on BBC Radio London. Usha visited Nairobi as part of an Indian festival. She was so popular that she was invited to stay on. Singing and quite often nationalistic songs in Swahili made her extremely popular and the then President Jomo Kenyatta made her an Honorary Citizen of Kenya. She sang the famous song "Malaika" (angel) with Fadhili Williams who was the original singer. She produced a record "live in Nairobi" with a local band Fellini Five.

Uthup sang several songs in the 1970s and 1980s for music directors R D Burman and Bappi Lahiri. She also reprised some of R.D. Burman songs that were sung by others such as Mehbooba Mehbooba and Dum Maro Dum and popularised them to a distinct end.

Uthup sang in Chris Perry's Konkani album ''Chris Perry Presents Usha - 'Meu Amor' ''.

She is currently (2011-2012) a judge on Kuyil Paatu, aired in Kalaignar TV, a popular tamil TV channel, along with Anuradha Sriram.

She is a stage performer and gave performances all over the world and is known for her lively stage presence. She has been felicitated with several awards over the years, some of which include Rajiv Gandhi Purashkar for National Integration for quality music, Mahila Shiromani Purashkar for international peace, and Channel [V] award for outstanding achievement.

Recordings

She recorded her first album with Luis Banks for which she was paid Rs. 3500. Since then, she has recorded numerous albums. Usha's Hindi version of Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough", titled "Chhupke Kaon Aya", can be found on the album ''Tom Middleton - The Trip'' (2004). A cover of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" is on another Tom Middleton album, ''Cosmosonica - Tom Middleton Presents Crazy Covers Vol. 1'' (2005). She recently recorded a song called "Rhythm and Blues" with the Indian rock band Parikrama which appeared on Channel V on April 23, 2007.

Uthup is also an actress, often singing and acting in India's signature musical films. In 2006, she acted in the Malayalam movie ''Pothan Vava'' as Kurisuveettil Mariamma.

She made a cameo appearance in the movie ''Bombay To Goa'' with Amitabh Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha in 1972. In 2007, she appeared in ''Bow Barracks Forever'' directed by Anjun Dutt as herself. Again in 2007, she appeared in ''Hattrick'' music video as herself.

She appeared in disguise on ''Indian Idol'' 1 and 2. She was one of the co-judges of the 2007 and 2008 & ''Idea Star Singer'' Season V (2010) the most rated south Indian reality show as well music oriented reality shows in Malayalam.

She has a minor role in the 2010 Tamil movie ''Manmadan Ambu'', as the mother of Madhavan.

She also acted in Vishal Bhardwaj's ''7 Khoon Maaf'' as a maid. She has also sang a song in the film which released on February 18, 2011. In 2012, she has starred in a Kannada film ''Parie'' which is slated for the late April release.

Usha's trademark is her massive bindi and flowers that she wears in her hair, as well as her Kancheepuram saris that she adhere.

Personal life

She is married to Jani Chacko Uthup who is originally from Manganam, Kottayam, and was formerly married to the late Ramu Iyer. They have a daughter Anjali and a son Sunny, named after the song, "Sunny".

She currently lives in Kolkata with her husband. She is considered an icon of modern Kolkata and is an active social presence in the city life in this city of joy.

Master Saleem (; born July 13, 1980) sometimes referred as ''Saleem Shahzada (Salim Shahzada)'' is an Indian singer from Punjab, known for his work as a playback singer in Bollywood films, like ''Heyy Babyy'' (2007), ''Dostana'' and ''Love Aaj Kal'' (2009). He has also released private albums, of Punjabi Music, Religious and Sufi music.

Early life and training

He was born Saleem Shahkoti (Saleem Shahzada), in Shahkot, near Jalandhar, Punjab He is the son of the famous Sufi singer Ustad Pooran Shah Koti, who was also the guru of folk singers, Hans Raj Hans, Jasbir Jassi and Sabar Koti. At the age of six Saleem also became his disciple and started learning singing.

Career

At the age of 10, he gave his first public performance at the opening ceremony of Bathinda Doordarshan (TV station), with his song, ''Charkhe Di Ghook'', and thus earned the name Master Saleem. Soon he started appearing on TV shows like, ''Jhilmil Taare''.

Saleem's first album, ''Charkhe Di Ghook'', was released when he was 10 years old. It was released on the label ''Sur Taal'', created by his father's friend, Majnider Singh Goli, and went on to become a hit. This led to several Punjabi music and religious albums and live shows. His song ''Dhol Jagiro Da'' also became a huge hit and giving him wide popularity. In the late 1990s, however as he was growing his voice started changing, which lessened his popularity. He made his comeback in 2000, with a hit ''Aj Hona Deedar Mahi da'', which he sang at a New Year's programme at Doordarshan channel, and later released albums dedicated to Goddess Durga including, ''Mela Maiya Da'' (2004), ''Aj Hai Jagrata'', ''Meri Maiya'' and ''Darshan Kar Lao''.

Around 2005, singer Jasbir Jassi introduced him to music director Sandeep Chowta, who subsequently called him to Delhi to record single ''Sajni'' in Sony Music album ''Teri Sajni''.

Eventually Shankar Mahadevan, of the music trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, heard his performances at a ''jagaran'' at the Devi Talaab Mandir, Jalandhar, being aired at a religious TV channel, and thus Saleem made his debut as playback singer with single "Mast Kalandar" from the film ''Heyy Babyy'' (2007) under their music direction. The song was a hit and launched his Bollywood career. This was followed by most well-known singles including "Tashan Mein" from the film ''Tashan'' and ''Maa Da Ladla'' from the film ''Dostana'' (2008), and ''Aahun Aahun'' in ''Love Aaj Kal'' (2009). and in 2010 some of his hit songs have been "Humka Peeni Hai" from "Dabangg and "Shakira" in "No Problem and "Chamki Jawani" in Yamla Pagla Deewana. In 2011 one of his first hits was "Rola Pe Gaya" in Patiala House
